The London Region Recruitment Team is made up of 10 experienced organisers and recruitment officers and works on long term strategic recruitment projects in all parts of the Region at the direction of the Regional Secretary.

Recruitment of new members into the union is the responsibility of every member and union representative in the Region. The vast majority of the 1,500 new members, who join GMB London each month, join because a work colleague gave them a form, sat them down and helped them fill it in.

The Recruitment Team aims to encourage members and stewards to focus on recruitment in their own workplaces as well as undertaking direct recruitment in workplaces where we have no members or organisation.

How’s it Done?
To be effective, workplace recruitment by members and stewards needs to be structured and systematic and we recommend each workplace is "mapped out" before you start asking colleagues to join. You can get more information on workplace mapping from…
Successful workplace recruitment should follow the following principles:

  1. It should be presented as a CAMPAIGN on workplace issues.
  2. It should focus on local issues to gain CREDIBILITY.
  3. It should involve systematic CONTACT with non members.
  4. It should show non members COMMITMENT over the long term
  5. It should COMMUNICATE the union’s local successes
