RACE & EQUALITY

THE WAY FORWARD

Welcome to the Race and Equality Committee page of the GMB London Region.

GMB has been at the forefront of the fight for equality within trade unions, at the workplace and within society for many years. Women make up nearly 40 per cent of our members and we have had structural arrangements for women since 1980. Our Equal Rights structures also cover discrimination on the grounds of disability, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation and equality issues for men.

National and Regional Equal Rights Advisory Committees advise on union equal rights policies and liaise with National and Regional Race Committees. They advise on recruitment and participation (at all levels within the GMB) of women and other groups who experience discrimination.

The Equality and Diversity Forum (EDF)

A network of national organisations committed to equal opportunities, social justice, good community relations, respect for human rights and an end to discrimination based on age, disability, gender and gender identity, race, religion or belief, and sexual orientation.

  • EDF works to reduce the impact of prejudice and discrimination on people’s ability to realise their potential.
  • EDF works to promote the human rights of all individuals.
  • EDF works towards a fair society based on mutual respect and understanding.

The network has successfully built consensus and cooperation between a wide range of organisations committed to progress on equality and human rights, enabling them to improve the services and support they can offer to their beneficiaries and to the general public.
